Welcome to the web portal of The Yoik Archive Project
The main purpose of the Yoik Archive Project is to ensure that recordings of yoik, the traditional way of singing of the Sami people, will be preserved for future generations.
The project runs from the 1 August 2005 until 31 December 2007 and will guarantee the preservation of the recording for the future, and make them available through an user-friendly database. The project will also work for the establishment of a permanent yoik archive.
Recordings are today scattered into different archive in Norway, Finland and Sweden. Some of the old recordings are in bad shape and in the process of degeneration. Through digitalisation the survival of the material will be secured. Through catalogisation and by creating a database where the information about the recordings will be stored, the project will make the material available for researchers and to the public.
